Kansas City Chiefs upgrade at quartback with Matt Cassel

New England Patriots named Cassel as their franchise player in early February, today he was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Cassel is the second part of the trade that sent Patriots linebacker Mike Vrabel to the Chiefs on Friday. In exchange, the Patriots acquire the Chiefs’ second-round pick (34th overall) in the 2009 NFL draft.

“I have a long history with both players,” Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli said in a statement. “Mike and Matt are men that I respect both personally and professionally. I look forward to having them as new members of the Chiefs family.”

Cassel stepped in as the starter after Tom Brady suffered a devastating knee injury in the first game of the 2008 season. Cassel finished 327 of 516 for 3,693 yards, with 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
